Number is one of the largest parts of a maths qualification because it is arguably one of the most important topics. Understanding the basics of number and the number system is crucial to so many day-to-day activities.

Number and the Number System

The key concepts that fall within this topic are:

  • Fractions, decimals, percentages: they are all around us, from shopping deals, to cake slicing, to measurement. FDP are all connected with each other and are just different ways of showing the same value.
  • Basic calculations: multiplying and dividing whole numbers, decimals and fractions. Numbers (0-9), symbols & operations, place value (including decimals), integers.
  • Units of measure: Length (mm, cm, m, km), time (seconds, minutes, hours), temperature (centigrade), mass (mg, g, kg), volume (ml, cl, l).
  • Ratio and proportion: A ratio says how much of one thing there is compared to another thing and comparing values. Ratio and proportion are commonly used in cooking, map scales and sharing items amongst a group of people.
